This Zip file contains .dsk images and related material for the 1989 release of Origin's
Ultima Trilogy for the Apple II. In 1989, Origin re-released the first 3 Ultima games in
a single package. Ultima 1 and Ultima 2 were updated to run under ProDOS (although it was
protected) and were rewritten to use a later Ultima game engine. Ultima 3 was updated to
provide Mockingboard support for background music during the game. Unfortunately, the
Ultima 1 and Ultima 2 updates did not include Mockingboard support.

These images have probably already been released and on Asimov, but separated and put
in different folders. For completeness and to be sure, this Ultima Trilogy set is
being released as a single Zip file. Each disk was deprotected with a minimum of changes
(if needed) and left in it's original state (no crack screens, etc).

Crack notes on Ultima 3:
Ultima 3 uses the disk Volume ID to determine which disk is inserted and is also a part
of the original copy protection routines. There are really only 2 valid Volumes allowed
due to the protection. If a volume is not 1 or 2, then the disk will hang in a loop. On
a physical Apple II, this isn't a problem since you can format a disk with the needed
Volume ID, and everything works fine. On an emulator, with a .dsk image the Volume
informationis no longer available, so this becomes an issue.

Because of that, I have created a patch on the .dsk image in order to make it work in an
emulator environment. This patch isn't necessary on a real Apple II, as noted earlier,
but I wanted to mention it here for completeness.

This is a single byte patch and is made on Track 0, Sector B byte 20 changes
from $F0 to $D0 on utril3a.dsk, which is the Ultima 3 boot disk.

Going from .dsk back to physical floppies will work fine with this patch. If you wanted
to patch it back, you need to make sure your floppy is formatted first with a Volume
ID of 2, then find a way to copy from the .dsk image to a physical disk without changing
the volume number back to 254. A sector-by-sector copy program that allows you to
define different source and destination slots would be the best bet.

As mentioned earlier, there is Mockingboard support on this Ultima 3. When you first
boot the Ultima 3 disk, you should see a screen to set up your Mockingboard type and
slot. If you have a Mockingboard (or compatible) installed, but you do not see this
set up screen, then it's possible that your Mockingboard is not being detected by the
code. This may also hold true for emulators that emulate Mockingboard support (Virtual
][ for the Mac falls into this category). If this happens, when you first boot the disk,
hold down any of the following keys to FORCE the Mockingboard set up code to appear:
M
Control-M (or enter/return)
]
Control-]
Once the screen appears, select the correct Mockingboard model and slot and you should
be greeted with background music throughout the game.
